Our next Devonshire House Dinner will be on 26th January 2016 at the East India Club, 16 St James’s Square, London SW1Y 4LH  – We are delighted that our guest Speaker will be Lord Stephen Green.

Stephen Green was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and at Oxford University where he graduated in 1969 with a BA (First Class Honours) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.  He also obtained a Masters Degree in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975. He was created a Life Peer in 2010 and was appointed Minister of State for Trade and Investment in January 2011.  He retired from this position in December 2013. Lord Green began his career in 1970 with the British Government’s Ministry of Overseas Development.  In 1977, he joined McKinsey & Co Inc, management consultants, with whom he undertook assignments in Europe, North America and the Middle East. He joined The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in 1982 with responsibility for corporate planning activities, and in 1985 was put in charge of the development of the bank’s global treasury operations.  In 1992, he became Group Treasurer of HSBC Holdings plc with responsibility for the HSBC Group’s treasury and capital markets businesses globally. In 1998, he was appointed to the Board of HSBC Holdings plc as an Executive Director.  He became Group Chief Executive in 2003 and Group Chairman 2006.  He retired from HSBC in December 2010. Lord Green was Chairman of the British Bankers’ Association from 2006 to 2010.  He also served as a Trustee of the British Museum.  He served as a non-executive director of BASF.se until 2010. He is Chairman of the Natural History Museum, Chairman of the International Advisory Council of the British Chambers of Commerce and is a member of the House of Lords EU Select Committee. He is an ordained priest in the Church of England. Stephen Green has written four books – Serving God? Serving Mammon? [1996]; Good Value, Choosing a Better Life in Business [2009];  Reluctant Meister – How Germany’s Past is Shaping its European Future [2014]; and The European Identity – Historical and Cultural Realities We Cannot Deny [2015]. Stephen Green is married with two daughters.

Lord Green and myself did readily agree that we would not talk about banking or the EU Referendum – and, accordingly, chose the topic:- “Britain’s trade challenges in a global world.”.  Ironically, this topic  may, arguably, lie at the heart of both banking and the EU but it does elevate the serious thinking and the tone to higher levels. In fact, it’s likely to be the sort of level that you will find through this following link –  http://www.capx.co/the-european-identity/.

Lord Green’s talk will be followed by our usual substantive Q&A session, which tends to be about 30 minutes.

You can bring a guest, if you wish – have a word with our office. The evening starts with Drinks from 6.00pm. Dinner will be at 6.45pm and Lord Green will speak to us at as close to 8pm as we can get with  formal proceedings scheduled to finish at 9pm – enough time for more conversations and/or to still get home in reasonable time! We’re limited to 80  – so there is a need to respond quickly!

After a bit of discussion, we have arrived at this topic for his talk – “A German view on global political and economic challenges.” As you might imagine this will cover a broad range of issues, particularly in the Q&A and is likely to be highly topical in the context of current debates going on in the UK. A Devonshire House TIF Talk

A Topical Interest Forum – Short, Sharp & Immediately Relevant.

Gender Pay Reporting –  28.6.16

Would you – or, if you’d prefer, one of your senior colleagues –  like to join us at our next Topical Issues Forum on 28.6.16 at the offices of Charles Russell Speechlys, 5 Fleet Place, London, EC4M 7RD

Our TIF Talks – Topical Issues Fora – are ideal companion Events to our well established formal Dinners – you can read more about them here.  Our aim is to pick up something that has very current topicality and/or importance and invite experts with specialist knowledge to bring us up to date and discuss it with us. Our Topical Issues Fora are short, sharp, Immediately Relevant focused seminars, designed NOT to intrude into the working day nor valuable home-time but offer a valuable and concentrated opportunity to catch up on a work issue that has immediate relevance  – and alongside like-minded senior professionals.

We gather at 6pm, do the business between 6.30pm and 7.30pm followed by a glass of wine and something to nibble at for those who want to linger on till around 8pm – and maybe a bit longer at your choice.

The Event will be hosted and presented by Charles Russell Speechlys Partner Nick Hurley.

Nick specialises in both contentious and non-contentious employment law issues. He has broad experience both in the Employment Tribunals and in the Civil Courts and has conducted cases involving discrimination, whistle blowing and TUPE to name but a few. Nick’s non-contentious experience covers a wide spectrum of work ranging from advising on complex employment documentation, giving strategic advice on reorganisation programmes and business transfers.  He is a prolific contributor to newspapers and journals, regularly lectures on employment law issues and has contributed chapters to a number of books.  Nick is described by Chambers as standing out “for his breadth of practice, including substantial expertise in advising both respondents and claimants. “He cared about the output, instead of just going through the motions.”” In  Legal 500 he is described as impressing with his “strategic and commercial approach to complex and highly sensitive issues”.

Nick Hurley writes:-

Mind the gap

“There is no place for any gender pay gap in today’s society – fully capitalising on the talent and experience of women is good for individuals, employers and our economy. That is why this government is taking bold steps to tackle the gender pay gap” – Nicky Morgan MP – Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities

This is the clear ideological goal of the present Government in the latest gender legislation to try and tackle sex discrimination and equal pay. For companies with 250 or more employees, the obligation to publish details of their gender pay gap is coming soon.  In April 2017 employers will be required to take a preliminary snapshot of their pay data, which then needs to be analysed and published by April 2018.  Under the legislation the pay must be reported on in four key ways: the mean gap, the median gap, the gender bonus gap and salary quartiles.  This information needs to be published on the employer’s website and stay there for three years, as well as on a government sponsored website.

Whilst there is a reasonable lead in period to prepare, to conduct a full and proper review and manage any equal pay issues that may arise will take time and a commitment from senior management to the process. In this session you will be expertly guided on what this legislation will require from your organisation to be legally compliant and tips on what practical steps employers should be taking right now.

As with most recent legislation on this type, the Head of Function has to sign off the Returns – getting these wrong can land you in trouble!
